As a federal judge at the trial and appellate levels, tried, decided and authored opinions in cases involving the entire panoply of federal law issues, civil and criminal. Accumulated experience in all matters that come before federal courts, particularly in the areas of employment discrimination, class actions, intellectual property, commercial and corporate disputes, and criminal law. At the time of appointments to the United States District Court and the Third Circuit, was the youngest federal judge in the United States. Left the bench for private practice in 1999. <br/><br/>Joined Schnader in 2002, and has built a national and international ADR practice involving many of the world’s leading corporations and agencies of the United States government, as well as a trial and appellate practice. <br/><br/>Member of the American Law Institute; a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators; a Board and Executive Committee member of the American Arbitration Association, was presented “Outstanding Director Award” for 2010; a member of the Board of the Georgetown Supreme Court Institute; and an honorary fellow of the American Academy of Appellate lawyers. Having accumulated experience in all matters that come before the federal courts, have mediated all types of commercial disputes, including employment, intellectual property, shareholder, successor liability, government agency, contract, environmental, aviation and other matters.<br/><br/>Taught courses on advocacy, adjudication and ADR throughout the United States. Has helped train lawyers and judges in mediation techniques in Europe. Has also trained Department of Justice attorneys in mediation at the National Advocacy Center in Columbia, South Carolina and at the Attorney General’s Advocacy Institute.
I believe in a “roll up the sleeves”, hands on aggressive approach to resolving complex cases and prefer the active participation of reasonable counsel who are serious about the mediation process. To that end, I prepare with the parties in advance to develop their underlying needs and interests and to acquire a deeper understanding of areas of impasse. I also recommend multiple sessions whenever appropriate and am willing to work with parties for as long as it takes to reach an agreement.

Trained Department of Justice attorneys in mediation at the National Advocacy Center in Columbia, South Carolina, and served as an instructor in trial advocacy at the Attorney General's Advocacy Institute. Has also served on the faculty of continuing legal education programs focusing upon appellate practice and procedure, mediation, arbitration, and employment discrimination.<br/><br/>Taught courses on advocacy, adjudication and ADR throughout the United States and has helped train lawyers and judges in mediation techniques in Europe. Authored numerous articles on subjects ranging from the death penalty to judicial reform to dispute resolution to appellate advocacy, and has testified before Congress in connection with Guantanamo detainees and judicial nominations.
