I often get asked: What do you do as a Special Master or Court Appointed Neutral?

I help the judiciary.

How?

Judges don’t have the time or skills to create bespoke ESI discovery processes for litigants.

Cases can stall in eDiscovery for far longer than needed, resulting in case backlogs and unpleasant sanctions for litigants.

I assist by creating transparent, repeatable, defensible processes that help simplify complex disputes involving complex data.

Shira A. Scheindlin stated, "These court appointments are made for the very purpose of resolving disputes that the court cannot resolve because of the lack of sufficient judicial resources or the lack of the required expertise or both."

Simply put, there are not enough daily hours to move the current caseloads through the system. While I am only a part of the discovery process as an ESI Special Master, I would like to think I give the judiciary time back to work on more significant case issues.
